As a homeowner, you may have wondered about
the cost of installing a solar electric, or photovoltaic (PV), system for your
home. Perhaps you wanted to design a solar electric system for your home or
cottage, but didn’t know where to start. Check out Quick-PV.
Whether you are curious about the number of components needed to build such a system or want advice reviewing manufacturer’s spec sheets to select desired components, Quick-PV is the answer.
Quick-PV can size stand-alone (off-grid), grid-interactive (grid-tied),and grid-interactive with battery backup, PV systems. You can create, save and compare different design scenarios.
Quick-PV runs on Windows 7, Vista or XP, allowing homeowners and small business owners to design a solar PV system based on electricity usage and location. You should have a list of appliances (for stand-alone systems) and a year’s worth of electric bills (for grid-interactive systems) before beginning a design.

REvaluator
REvaluator is a free online tool that evaluates RE system feasibility and estimates its cost for residential customers. REvaluator is geared toward residential customers, where house size is smaller than 5,000 sq-ft and electricity usage is less than 1,000 KWh a month. The actual cost of installed systems may vary dramatically due to site condition, customer needs and local zoning requirements.
Interested customers should consult with a qualified RE system contractor to request a site visit and a quote. A qualified contractor can also assist in navigating through the installation process, like through local governance and utility companies.
Before starting, users may want to visit the REvaluator page first, glance through the questions, jot down information needs to collect and then go back to the page when all the necessary information is collected. To obtain “Monthly power consumption,” collect the electric bills from last year then calculate the average usage (in KWh) per month.
